Wellness Resources
We do not deny that residency can be physically, emotionally, and mentally trying at times. Joining a group of supportive residents and attendings is one of the best choices you can make when choosing a program. UAMS has a long tradition of congeniality among fellow residents and attendings, actively fostering connections through mentorship programs, social events, and collaborative learning experiences. These interactions foster a strong support system, enriching both your personal and professional growth during training.
While supportive friendships and mentors are crucial components of thriving in your residency, we understand that having a structured approach to wellness is just as important. Resident wellness is a priority of our program and is addressed in a preventive fashion. During orientation, you receive education regarding well-being through modules and lectures covering burnout, fatigue recognition and mitigation, and available services. This information is also accessible to you at any time throughout training via New Innovations for reference.
To further support resident well-being, our program grants you 4–6 “wellness half-days” per academic year. These dedicated days provide you time for scheduling medical, dental, and mental health visits, as well as other self-care activities, ensuring you the opportunity to focus on your personal wellness amidst your demanding schedules.
Among UAMS’s many missions, one is to help employees find better solutions to life’s stressors. The UAMS Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is designed to support you in navigating challenges by providing guidance on personal concerns. This comprehensive resource is available to you, your spouse, and dependents, offering office hours, 24-hour emergency services, and a library of online resources covering addiction, emotional health and wellness, and financial wellbeing. For those unable to visit a counselor in person, video and telephone counseling options ensure accessibility, even for residents at rural program sites. The EAP provides you up to ten free sessions per year, reinforcing our commitment to resident wellness across all program locations. More information on EAP can be found here.”
