Honors Program in Underserved Primary Care Medicine

The Honors Program in Rural and Urban Underserved Primary Care Medicine (HPUPC) is a three-year program available to all first-year medical students at UAMS who are passionate about transforming the future of Family Medicine in Arkansas. The goal of this program is to prepare students to provide comprehensive medical care for underserved populations in both urban and rural settings. Applications for all first-year medical students at UAMS are available until February 28th, 2022.

Beginning in their first year of medical school, students will have the opportunity to work with Family Medicine physicians in Arkansas who practice in underserved and rural communities. Students will also choose a faculty member to mentor them in completing a longitudinal research project which will be conducted throughout their medical school career.

During their second year of medical school, students will complete a literature review related to their longitudinal project. They will also have the opportunity to attend the Student Rural Health Summit, join the Family Medicine Interest Group, and serve at student-run clinics, among other options.

By the end of their third year or final year, students will have completed a clerkship in Family Medicine at one of UAMS’s Regional Campuses, also known as Area Health Educational Centers (AHECs), or at an approved Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).

In their final year of the program, students will complete their longitudinal project and have the opportunity to present their findings at Student Research Day. They will also have the opportunity to choose an elective and qualifying extracurricular activity.

There is great need for Family Medicine physicians in our state. Join the Honors Program and take the next step in becoming the vanguard of rural and community health in Arkansas.
