Honors Program in Underserved Primary Care Medicine

The Honors Program in Underserved Rural and Urban Primary Care Medicine (HPUPC) is a cutting-edge, four-year program available to all first-year medical students at UAMS who are passionate about transforming the future of Family Medicine in Arkansas. The goal of this program is to prepare students to provide comprehensive medical care for underserved populations in both urban and rural settings. Applications for the Class of 2025 are currently available.

Beginning their first year of medical school, students will have the privilege of shadowing Family Medicine doctors in Central Arkansas who serve underserved and rural populations. They will also choose a faculty mentor who will help guide them through a research project which will last their medical school career.

Their second year of medical school, students will complete a literature review related to their longitudinal project. They will also have the opportunity of attending the Student Rural Health Summit, joining the Family Medicine Interest Group, and serving at student-run clinics, among other options.

By the end of their third year, students will complete a clerkship in Family Medicine at one of UAMS’s Regional Campuses, also known as Area Health Educational Centers (AHECs), or at an approved Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). They will also complete their longitudinal project.

In their fourth year, students will submit a scholarly project and have the opportunity to present findings of their longitudinal project at Student Research Day. They will also have the opportunity to choose an elective and qualifying extracurricular activity.

There is great need for Family Medicine doctors in our state. Join the Honors Program and take the next step in becoming the vanguard of rural and community health in Arkansas.
