UAMS Southwest Junior Clerkship Opportunities

UAMS Southwest, established in 1976, serves nine counties in Arkansas and four counties in northeast Texas. There are two UAMS Southwest locations – All for Kids Pediatrics located in historic downtown Texarkana and the Family Medical Center adjacent to Interstate 30. Texarkana has a population of 81,000 in Texas, and 34,000 in Arkansas and services a metropolitan area of 400,000.

UAMS Southwest participates in the Junior Clerkship Program, the Nurse Practitioner Program, the Physicians’ Assistant Program, School of Pharmacy Program, and the senior medical student elective rotations, with an exclusive offering in sports medicine. Texarkana has two general hospitals with a total bed capacity of 500. There are over 250 physicians practicing in Texarkana, including most specialties.

The library at UAMS Southwest is equipped with a qualified staff and has access to numerous online databases, journals, and other resources necessary for medical reference work. The library offers up-to-date audiovisual services for continuing education and classroom training, and is available to all health professionals in the southwest area.

The city of Texarkana is located in two states and named for three; Arkansas and Texas share the post office and federal building equally and Louisiana is just 30 miles to the south. The area’s economy is based upon agriculture, manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade. One of the outstanding features of this twin city is the Perot Theater, an elegantly refurbished opera house affiliated with the Regional Arts and Humanities Council, which is responsible for bringing in a variety of entertaining cultural programs.

Fine restaurants, first-class accommodations, and a spectacular assortment of recreational opportunities make this one of the most important destinations between Little Rock and Dallas. Area attractions include Old Washington, the Crater of Diamonds State Park and the Hope Watermelon Festival. There are over 100 lakes and rivers within a 50-mile radius, which offer boating, fishing, skiing, camping and hiking.

Texarkana hosts Spring Lake Park, Bringle Park and Ferguson Park for family get-togethers and outings with walking paths and playgrounds for the children. There are several school districts in the city of Texarkana TX/AR and many small school districts surrounding the area.
