UAMS Northwest Junior Clerkship Opportunities

UAMS Northwest was established in Fayetteville in 1975 with the objective of developing a program that included all of the overall AHEC program goals, with an emphasis on excellence. Our region consists of six counties in Northwest Arkansas (Washington, Madison, Newton, Benton, Carroll, and Boone), with an estimated population of 600,000+. Dr. Michael Macechko serves as the Family Medicine Clerkship Site Director. Janice Huddleston is the Clerkship Coordinator.

The UAMS Northwest Family Medicine Residency has two clinic facilities and both are Patient-Centered Medical Homes. Block Juniors work at the UAMS-Family Medical Center-Springdale. Six of our upper level residents have their Family Medicine Clinics in this facility. Four M.D. faculty as well as one Pharm.D. Faculty are based in Springdale. We currently use Centricity CPS 12 EMR. Noon conferences are held at the Fayetteville location with the ability to use Distance Learning and Interactive Video Conferences at the Springdale FMC.
Our library is located at the UAMS NW Campus and you are welcome to use it. The library web site provides access to bibliographic databases such as Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews, Health & Psychosocial Instruments, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, PsycInfo and MEDLINE; clinical reference tools such as Lexi-Comp, StatRef!, Harrison’s Online, UptoDate, and Clin-eguide; over 1400 electronic textbooks; and subscriptions to more than 4,000 electronic journals. Most of these resources are available both on and off campus. From off campus, users will be asked to enter their user/domain account and password before accessing some resources. We also have a small core collection of print materials which are available for traditional check out.

Northwest Arkansas is known for its beautiful and rugged Ozark Mountains. It is considered by many Arkansans to be the most desirable area to live in the state. Fayetteville was recently named the fourth best place to live in America in the 2019 U.S. News Best Places to Live Rankings. Because of the desirability of this region, several major corporations have established their headquarters in this area. With the main campus of the University of Arkansas being located in Fayetteville, we have available all of the advantages of life in a college town, such as: excellent restaurants, various cultural events, and major college sports. Because of our affiliation with UAMS, we are allowed access to the university’s facilities here in Fayetteville. These facilities include the university’s unequaled athletic building with its indoor swimming pool, racquetball courts, basketball courts, etc.

The residency program facilities are a short drive from the incredible natural wonders of the Ozark Mountains. White water rivers, lakes for fishing and boating, backpacking trails, caves, and sheer mountain cliffs abound for your exploration. The Victorian city of Eureka Springs is less than an hour’s drive and features the Great Passion Play, the breathtaking Thorncrown Chapel, and the Eureka Springs Botanical Gardens, along with unique shops for browsing. Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a 30 minute drive from Fayetteville.
