Academy of Pre-Health Scholars

 Summer program offered to disadvantaged and/or underrepresented high school students that is designed to facilitate a successful academic career for students who have strong interests in healthcare professions. Academy overview consists of ACT preparation, academic success, introduction to research, and introduction to public health and medical professions.

MASH – (Medical Applications of Science for Health)

2-week summer enrichment program for rising juniors and seniors to have a deeper experience with a wide variety of health professions. Through shadowing, hands-on activities, dissections, CPR and First-Aid, speakers and projects, students gain knowledge and experience to make a better-informed decision about their career in healthcare.

Day in the Life
Offered by UAMS Regional Programs

One day healthcare experience allowing seniors to see what A Day in the Life is like for a medical professional. Through speakers such as Physical Therapist, Family Medicine Physicians, Nurses, and more, students are able to learn about the career and ask questions. Students also tour a medical facility (where available) and take part in medical station rotations for hands-on activities such as drawing blood, giving injections, behavioral health scenarios and obstetrics with an empathy belly.

Hands on Healthcare

Patient Ambassador
Offered by UAMS and St. Bernards Medical Center

Through this partnership with St. Bernards, our students are trained in HIPAA, Fire Safety, Cultural Competency, Customer Service and hospital infection control guidelines. Students volunteer for a total of 50 hours in various areas of the hospital. 

MD Mentors
Offered by UAMS Regional Programs

MD Mentors was created during the pandemic to keep students engaged and connected. Our undergraduate students are paired with medical students for mentoring. In addition, mentors sign up to do zoom presentations for students statewide on a variety of topics.

Minority Association of Pre-medical Students (MAPS) Conference
Offered by the Edith Irby Jones Chapter of the Student National Medical Association and UAMS Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

For underrepresented college students, post-baccalaureate students, or re-applicant interested in becoming a physician. Students receive counseling on ALL aspects of applying to medical school including MCAT, building a CV, interview and recommendation letters, as well as succeeding as a re-applicant, getting a mentor, and multiple breakout sessions.

AHEC Scholars is a program for health professions students interested in rural or community-based practice. Eligible students should have an interest in rural or undeserved healthcare and be enrolled in an approved health professions program. Approved degree programs include medical, pharmacy, and physician assistant programs.
