Extending Our Mission
UAMS’s mission to improve the health, health care and well-being of Arkansans and of others in the region, extends to all parts of our state through our eight regional campuses and numerous community-based GME programs. Our regional campuses provide access to medical services and health research for small town and rural residents and education for health care students and professionals. This combination of service and education improves the health for rural Arkansans while also providing needed experience and training. UAMS Regional Campuses, formerly the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program, was started in 1973 through the combined efforts of then Governor Dale Bumpers, the Arkansas State Legislature and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
Our regional campuses serve as the main educational outreach effort of UAMS, preparing physicians and healthcare professionals to serve in primarily rural areas. The programs offer training for family medicine residents and students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and some fields of allied health, as well as continuing education for medical professionals. These campuses also provide information and programs about health careers to ensure an adequate future health care workforce for the state.
The UAMS Regional Centers sponsoring institution was formed to support UAMS GME programs located outside of our academic medical center in Little Rock, in recognition of the unique needs of community-based residency and fellowship programs. Our sponsoring institution reports up through the UAMS College of Medicine to the Vice Dean of GME and works closely with College of Medicine leadership to ensure excellence across all programs.
